Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the head coach of the senior India Men's team, BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced on July 9. The 42-year-old will debut in this role during the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, featuring 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is, starting on July 27.
Gambhir succeeds Rahul Dravid, who led the team from November 2021 to June 2024, culminating in a victorious T20 World Cup campaign in the USA and West Indies. Dravid's tenure saw India reach the finals of the ICC World Test Championship and the 2023 50-over World Cup, in addition to winning the T20 World Cup in 2024.
In a BCCI media release, Gambhir is described as being responsible for fostering a culture of excellence, discipline, and teamwork, while nurturing young talent. Although Gambhir has no prior coaching experience, he has been a mentor for several IPL teams, including the championship-winning Kolkata Knight Riders. As a player, he was part of India's World Cup-winning teams in 2007 and 2011, with an international career spanning from 2004 to 2016.
Jay Shah expressed confidence in Gambhir's ability to lead, citing his extensive experience and clear vision for Team India. Gambhir, in his statement, expressed his honor and commitment to making every Indian proud.
Shah and BCCI President Roger Binny also lauded Dravid for his successful tenure, praising his strategic acumen, talent nurturing, and leadership, which left a lasting legacy of excellence within the team. Binny expressed confidence in Gambhir's appointment, marking it as a new chapter for Indian cricket.
